Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin 2026: The Brutally Honest Upgrade Guide

Why Disney Finally Gutted Space Ranger Spin
Let’s be honest. The old version of this ride was a frustrating mess.
It was running on track systems from the 1970s. The laser blasters were bolted directly to the dashboard. You couldn't aim them properly, your forearm cramped up by the second room, and the mechanical "Z" targets gave you zero feedback. You basically just shot into the dark and hoped your score went up.
Compared to newer, high-tech shooter rides across the country, Space Ranger Spin felt like playing an Atari in the age of PlayStation 5. Disney knew it, and they finally fixed it.
Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin 2026: Disney World's Massive Upgrade

The 2026 Upgrades: What Actually Changed?
This isn't a minor refurbishment. Disney Imagineering overhauled the hardware, the software, and the story. Here are the three massive changes you will notice immediately.
1. Handheld Blasters & Haptic Feedback
The days of awkward aiming are over. The new XP-37 Star Cruisers feature handheld blasters. They are tethered to the dashboard, but you can pick them up and aim them like a normal person.
Even better? The laser beam is always on, so you know exactly where your red or green dot is landing. When you hit a target, the blaster actually vibrates in your hand. This is a total game-changer for kids who used to get frustrated, and for competitive adults looking to dominate their family.
2. Digital Targets & Unlimited Scoring
The physical targets are gone. They have been replaced by digital, interactive screens that flash when you hit them. Some of these targets even enter special "pulsing" or "rainbow" states. If you hit them during a pulse, you get massive bonus points.
But here is the real kicker: Disney removed the score ceiling.
In the old days, getting 999,999 points was easy. You hit the volcano target a few times, maxed out your score, and spent the rest of the ride checking your phone. Not anymore. The score now goes to infinity and beyond. To achieve the coveted "Galactic Hero" rank, you have to break 1,000,000 points.
Pro-Tip: The digital targets allowed Imagineers to hide brand new Easter eggs for the upcoming Toy Story 5 movie. Keep your eyes peeled for hidden sequences that unlock secret point bonuses.
"Buddy" and the Hyperspace Tunnel
First-timers used to spend half the ride just trying to figure out how to play. To fix this, Disney added a brand-new animatronic character in the first room. Her name is Buddy. She is a support robot who runs a live tutorial so you actually learn how to shoot before the real game starts.
Further in, the hyperspace tunnel got a massive visual upgrade. It used to be a dark, boring hallway. Now, it features state-of-the-art projection mapping. Buzz Lightyear is right there in the tunnel flying alongside your vehicle and fighting Emperor Zurg.

The Ultimate Bragging Rights: PhotoPass Integration
This is the coolest update for competitive families. You know that ride photo that flashes right before you battle Zurg?
The new Walt Disney World PhotoPass system now embeds your exact score, your rank, and your target hit-rate right onto the picture frame. Your bragging rights are literally printed on the image. You can’t fake a high score anymore.
Wait Times & Strategy: How to Ride Without Losing Your Mind
Because the early preview reviews are overwhelmingly positive, demand for this ride is going to be through the roof for the rest of 2026. The days of walking onto Buzz Lightyear with a 15-minute wait are officially over.
Expect standby wait times to routinely hit the 90-to-120-minute mark this summer. If you don't have a Lightning Lane, you are going to be sweating in the Tomorrowland sun. You must book this ride using the Lightning Lane Multi Pass system, or knock it out early during Early Theme Park Entry.
