In the heart of the American landscape, a legacy of natural wonder and cultural preservation was born - the National Park Service (NPS). The roots of this monumental institution trace back to the Act of March 1, 1872, when Congress set aside the awe-inspiring Yellowstone National Park in the Territories of Montana and Wyoming. A groundbreaking move, it was deemed "a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people," placing it under the exclusive control of the Secretary of the Interior.

This visionary act heralded a global movement, inspiring over 100 nations to establish more than 1,200 national parks and preserves. The United States, in the years following Yellowstone's inception, continued to authorize additional national parks and monuments, scattered like gems across the vast federal lands of the West.

Yet, a unified agency for managing these diverse federal parklands was lacking until the watershed moment of August 25, 1916. President Woodrow Wilson signed into existence the National Park Service, a novel federal bureau nestled within the Department of the Interior. Charged with safeguarding the 35 national parks and monuments under its care, the NPS also held the responsibility for those yet to be established.

The pivotal "Organic Act" of 1916 declared the NPS's mission: "to promote and regulate the use of the Federal areas known as national parks, monuments and reservations... to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

A defining moment occurred in 1933 when an Executive Order transferred 56 national monuments and military sites to the National Park Service, shaping the foundation of today's expansive and diverse national park system. This system, highlighted by areas of historical, scenic, and scientific importance, has grown to encompass over 400 areas, spanning more than 84 million acres across the United States and its territories.

The journey towards expanding this national treasure is meticulously guided. While Congress generally facilitates additions to the National Park System, national parks can only be created through legislative acts. The President, wielding authority under the Antiquities Act of 1906, can proclaim national monuments on federally held lands. The Secretary of the Interior, advised by the National Park System Advisory Board, a council of private citizens, plays a pivotal role in recommending additions to the System and shaping its policies.

As custodians of America's diverse cultural and recreational resources, the National Park Service wears many hats. It stands as an environmental advocate, a partner in community revitalization, a global leader in the parks and preservation community, and a pioneer in the mission to protect America's open space.

Today, over 20,000 dedicated National Park Service employees are the stewards of America's 400+ national parks. Collaborating with communities nationwide, they tirelessly work to preserve local history and create accessible recreational opportunities close to home.
