Starting May 7, 2025, Americans will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport or military ID, to board a domestic flight in the United States. This new requirement is the result of a law passed by Congress in 2005, which aims to increase security and prevent identity fraud.

Real ID

The REAL ID Act was passed in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when it was discovered that the terrorists had used fraudulent driver's licenses to board the planes they hijacked. The law requires states to follow specific security standards when issuing driver's licenses and other forms of identification. These standards include verifying the applicant's identity, lawful status, and social security number, as well as conducting background checks on DMV employees.

The REAL ID Act has been a source of controversy since it was passed. Critics argue that it is an invasion of privacy and that the requirements are too onerous, while supporters believe that it is necessary to prevent identity fraud and ensure national security.

To obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, individuals must provide the DMV with documents that prove their identity, such as a birth certificate or passport, as well as proof of residency and social security number. Some states also require a fingerprint scan or other biometric data. The cost of obtaining a REAL ID varies by state, but typically ranges from $30 to $50.

One of the key differences between a REAL ID-compliant driver's license and a regular driver's license is the gold star in the upper right-hand corner. This star indicates that the license is compliant with the REAL ID Act and can be used to board a domestic flight or enter a federal facility. If your driver's license does not have a gold star, it will not be accepted as valid identification for domestic air travel.

The effect of this new requirement on domestic travel is expected to be significant. According to the Department of Homeland Security, approximately 73% of Americans have a driver's license or ID card that is already REAL ID-compliant. However, that still leaves millions of Americans who will need to obtain a new form of identification before they can fly domestically.

To make the transition easier, the Department of Homeland Security has launched a public awareness campaign called "Get REAL" to educate Americans about the new requirements and encourage them to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification before the deadline. The campaign includes informational videos, social media posts, and other resources to help Americans understand the new requirements and navigate the process of obtaining a REAL ID.

The REAL ID Act represents a significant change in the way Americans will need to identify themselves when flying domestically. While it has been controversial, supporters believe that it is necessary to prevent identity fraud and ensure national security. Americans who do not have a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification will need to obtain one before May 7, 2025, or risk being denied boarding on their domestic flight.
