I literally just unpacked my bags from one of the best trips I've ever taken, and I'm so fired up I can barely sit still. I have to tell you EVERYTHING about Gatlinburg and the crown jewel of its downtown Parkway, Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies! If you’re dreaming of a vacation spot that crams in jaw-dropping views, non-stop fun, and the friendliest Southern charm, then you need to open a new tab and start planning your own trip to the Smokies, like, yesterday.
What I love most about this region is that YOU get to design your own perfect getaway. And at the heart of the action, Ripley’s Aquarium offers an incredible underwater escape that’s a home run for all ages. I'm a grown man who wanted to be a kid again just so I could crawl through the penguin tunnels—it's that much fun.
So, grab your favorite drink, get comfy, and let me be your guide to the aquatic magic waiting for you in Gatlinburg!

Why Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies is a Must-See
This isn't just any aquarium. Voted the “Best Aquarium in North America” by USA TODAY readers on multiple occasions, this place has welcomed over 15 million visitors since it first opened in 2000. With over 1.4 million gallons of water, it's home to more than 10,000 sea creatures from 350 different species. From the moment you walk in and are greeted by a giant whale skeleton, you know you're in for something special.
Exploring the Depths: Your Guide to the Exhibits
The aquarium is cleverly divided into themed sections, making your journey a seamless flow from one ecosystem to another.
Tropical Rainforest: Your adventure begins among piranhas and four-eyed fish in one of the planet's oldest and most fascinating ecosystems.
Ocean Realm & Coral Reef: Prepare to be mesmerized by swirling schools of fish, masters of camouflage like the weedy scorpionfish, and the vibrant colors of a thriving Indo-Pacific coral reef.
Gallery of the Seas: This is where things get wonderfully weird. The gallery is a stunning showcase of the ocean’s most unique and strangely beautiful creatures, including octopuses, seahorses, and ethereal jellyfish.
Shark Lagoon: The main event! Travel through one of the world's longest underwater tunnels on a 340-foot moving glidepath (think of it as a flat escalator for maximum viewing enjoyment). You're completely surrounded by sand tiger sharks, nurse sharks, and even a majestic green sea turtle named Sally. And don’t worry, that's not glass overhead—it's acrylic over 4 inches thick, which is scientifically stronger than concrete!

Penguin Playhouse: This $5 million, state-of-the-art habitat is home to a playful colony of African Penguins. The best part? Clear underwater tunnels that let kids (and the young at heart!) crawl through and get nose-to-beak with these amazing birds.
Interactive Fun: From Touch-A-Ray Bay to the hands-on Discovery Center with its three-story indoor playground, this aquarium is designed for kids and curious adults alike.

Beyond the Glass: Special Experiences at Ripley's Aquarium
Want to make your visit even more memorable? Ripley's offers several add-on adventures that are worth checking out:
Glass Bottom Boat Adventure: For a truly different perspective, take a ride where only three inches of glass separate you from the sharks in Shark Lagoon.
[Image: The Glass Bottom Boat adventure, showing visitors looking down at the sharks below]Penguin Encounters: Get up close and personal with a penguin and even take home a piece of art painted by one of the aquarium's penguin artists!
Mermaid Shows: Keep an eye on the schedule! Throughout the year, you can spot live mermaids gracefully swimming in the tanks—a truly magical experience.
Overnight Adventures: For the ultimate thrill, the aquarium hosts special overnight stays like "Sleeping With the Sharks" and "PJ Party with the Penguins."

Pro Tips for Your Visit to Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies
A little insider info goes a long way! Here are my top tips for a seamless and cheaper visit.
Buy Tickets Online: Skip the long lines at the entrance and often find combo deals for other Ripley's attractions by purchasing your tickets in advance.
Best Time to Visit: To avoid the biggest crowds, try visiting on a weekday or later in the evening. The aquarium is open 365 days a year!
Parking & Transportation: Parking in downtown Gatlinburg can be a hassle. There is a paid parking garage right behind the aquarium, but on busy days, the Gatlinburg Trolley is your best friend. The aquarium is conveniently located at Trolley Stop #5.
Plan Your Time: Give yourself at least two to three hours to see everything without feeling rushed.
Check the Daily Schedule: Don't miss out on fun events like the Penguin Parade or special dive shows. You can find the schedule on the Ripley's Aquarium website.
What to Pack for Your Day at the Aquarium
Packing smart can make your visit even more enjoyable. Here are a few essentials to bring along:
Comfortable Walking Shoes: You'll be on your feet for a few hours exploring, so comfort is key!
Camera or Smartphone: Photography is encouraged, but remember to turn off the flash to protect the animals.
Light Jacket or Sweater: It can be cool inside the aquarium, even on a hot Tennessee day.
Small Backpack: A great way to carry your essentials and any souvenirs you pick up along the way.
